Low Iron Glass Stair Railings on Standoffs
In this Del Lago Drive home in Fort Lauderdale, a sculptural black marble staircase rises through the center of the house, wrapped at the lower level by a glass wine cellar. The railings had to protect every flight and the open stairwell without hiding the stair itself, so they were built entirely in glass, with no posts and no frame around the panels.
Each panel is 9/16″ low iron laminated impact glass with a DuPont SentryGlas interlayer, machine high polished on all sides. Low iron glass removes the green tint of standard glass, so the marble and the light from the windows read in their true color through every panel. The glass is side mounted to the stair on a standoff system, which keeps the treads completely clear and lets the railing follow the stepped profile of the flights.
All hardware is brushed stainless, including the custom pieces the stair required, and a handrail mounted through the glass runs along the flights where specified. ACG Glass & Metals supplied the material and installed the railings on the existing stair, from the ground floor flights up to the glass guard at the upper landing.
