Frameless glass pool fence
that meets the barrier code

A pool barrier is a legal requirement in Florida, not a design choice. The question is only whether it looks like a fence. Frameless glass keeps the view of the water from the house and still does what the statute asks of it.
The barrier code

Four things the barrier has to do

Florida’s Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act, Chapter 515 of the Florida Statutes, sets the residential barrier requirements. Your local building department reviews and inspects, and has the final word on your property.

At least 48 inches high

Measured on the side away from the pool. Panels are cut so the finished height clears it once the spigot and the deck are accounted for.

No gap a small child can pass

Openings cannot allow a four inch sphere through. That governs the gap between panels and, just as importantly, the gap under them.

A self closing, self latching gate

It has to swing away from the pool and latch on its own every time. The release sits high enough to be out of a small child's reach.

Nothing that turns it into a ladder

Furniture, planters and equipment cannot give a climbing route over the barrier. This is what people fail at inspection, not the height.

We design to these requirements and we submit for the permit, but the authority having jurisdiction is the building department in your city or county. If your community has additional rules, or your pool sits under an older approval, we check that before we cut glass.
Systems

Three ways to stand the glass up

All three are frameless, which is the point: no top rail and no vertical post between panels, so the barrier disappears against the water.

Spigots

Small stainless posts set into the deck, two per panel. The most common choice and the cleanest look. Core drilled and grouted, or anchored to the slab depending on the deck.

Base shoe

A continuous aluminum channel that runs the length of the fence and clamps the glass along its whole bottom edge. Stronger, and it hides any unevenness in the deck line.

Standoffs

Where the glass has to fix to the side of a wall or a raised planter instead of standing on the deck. Same hardware family as our standoff railings.
The gate

The gate is where inspections fail

Everything else in the barrier is static. The gate moves, so it is the only part that can stop complying on its own. Four things have to be true every single time it closes.

Self closing

A hydraulic hinge brings it back from any position, with no help and no push.

Self latching

The latch has to catch on its own. A gate that needs a nudge does not pass.

Opens away from the pool

It swings outward, so a child leaning on it pushes it shut rather than open.

Release out of reach

The release is mounted high on the glass, on the pool side of the gate.

Materials

What we specify, and why it matters near salt

The 316 line is not upsell. On a coastal deck, 304 stainless will tea stain and eventually pit. It is the single most common reason a glass fence stops looking new.

What we check before we quote

The deck

What it is made of and how thick it is. A paver deck and a poured slab anchor differently.

The fixing

Whether we can core drill or have to surface mount.

The fall

Decks slope for drainage. Glass does not follow a slope, so the step gets designed in.

The gate

Where it should sit for how you actually use the yard.

A phone photo from two corners and a rough run length is enough to start. We will come back with a layout, a panel count and where the gate should go.
