Floor to Ceiling Glass Wine Cellar Around the Staircase
In this Del Lago Drive home in Fort Lauderdale, the wine collection lives inside the staircase. The owners wanted the stair and the wine wall to read as one sculptural piece next to the dining room, so the entire volume was enclosed in glass from the marble plinth up to the ceiling.
The enclosure is built with 1/2 inch low iron monolithic tempered glass, with 9/16 inch low iron SGP laminated impact glass where the plans called for it. Low iron glass keeps the panels free of the green tint of standard glass, so the black marble treads and the racks behind them show in their true color. The panels are held in architectural top and bottom U-channels, which leaves the faces of the glass clean from floor to ceiling.
The doors swing on commercial hydraulic self closing hinges with soft close and a 90 degree hold open, so the cellar can be left open while bottles are moved and still closes gently on its own. All hardware is polished stainless. Shop drawings were prepared and approved before fabrication, and ACG Glass & Metals handled delivery and installation.
