Frameless Glass Stair Railing on Standoffs
This West Palm Beach home has a two story stair that turns at a landing in front of a tall window wall, and the owners wanted the run to stay open and full of light. ACG Glass & Metals replaced the idea of a solid or picket railing with frameless glass from the first tread to the upper floor.
Every panel is 9/16 inch clear laminated impact glass with a DuPont SentryGlass interlayer, machine polished on all sides to comply with the applicable building codes. The glass is fixed to the side of the stair on a side mounted standoff system in brushed stainless, with no cap over the glass and clamps between the panels, so the top edge reads as one clean line.
Because of the way the steps are configured, the standoffs were upgraded during the project from 3/4 inch to 1 3/4 inch heavy duty standoffs, which hold the glass further off the stringer. Drawings and 3D renders were prepared for approval before fabrication.
